Foods that are toxic to cats!
Some people food is just not good for our cats. Here is the list of foods you should make sure that your cat does not ingest:
1) Grapes and raisins — Both of these are foods we love but these can cause kidney failure in cats! The toxic substance is unknown.
2) Chocolate – Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine. The digestive systems of cats can’t digest this substance so it is highly poisonous and can be fatal. Most chocolate also contains caffeine which is also toxic to cats.
3) Onions and Garlic — Onions and garlic contain the substance N-propyl disulphide which can annihilate red blood cells. Onions are the more poisonous of the two. But don’t let your cat have meats or chicken or fish that may have these spices in their sauces or breading.
4) Potatoes, tomatoes and any other nightshade plants — Green tomatoes contain Glycoalkanoid Solamine and this substance is toxic for cats. This substance can be found in tomatoes, potatoes, paprika, chili pepper, eggplant, petunias or the deadly nightshade (belladonna). Don’t let your cat chew on your petunia plants and don’t let them have access to your tomato plants! The leaves and stems are very toxic as well. I have read that these foods are OK when cooked, but to be safe, I don’t feed them to my cats in any form.
5) Milk — What? Milk is not actually toxic to cats BUT many cats are lactose intolerant and some cats are diabetic. The lactose in milk can cause stomach upset, diarrhea, cramps and gas.
If your cat experiences food poisoning, you will see some or all of these symptoms within 12 hours: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy, cramps, rashes or seizures.
Get your cat to the vet ASAP and if you can’t at least call ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435. A $60 fee may be billed to your credit card.
I do take my cats to a holistic vet and he says to offer them cooked greens, salads, meats, veggies, chicken and fish — whatever we are having for dinner. It’s real food. Just make sure there is no garlic or onions, or any else from the above list in the sauces or breading.
