Foods that are toxic to cats!

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

Some people food is just not good for our cats.   Here is the list of foods you should make sure that your cat does not ingest:

1) Grapes and raisins — Both of these are foods we love but these can cause kidney failure in cats!  The toxic substance is unknown.

2) Chocolate –  Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine.   The digestive systems of cats can’t digest this substance so it is highly poisonous and can be fatal.   Most chocolate also contains caffeine which is also toxic to cats.

3) Onions and Garlic — Onions and garlic contain the substance N-propyl disulphide which can annihilate red blood cells.    Onions are the more poisonous of the two.  But don’t let your cat have meats or chicken or fish that may have these spices in their sauces or breading.

4)  Potatoes, tomatoes  and any other nightshade plants — Green tomatoes contain  Glycoalkanoid Solamine and this substance is toxic for cats.    This substance can be found in tomatoes, potatoes, paprika, chili pepper, eggplant, petunias or the deadly nightshade (belladonna).   Don’t let your cat chew on your petunia plants and don’t let them have access to your tomato plants!   The leaves and stems are very toxic as well.  I have read that these foods are OK when cooked, but to be safe, I don’t feed them to my cats in any form.

5) Milk — What? Milk is not actually toxic to cats BUT many cats are lactose intolerant and some cats are diabetic.  The lactose in milk can cause stomach upset, diarrhea, cramps and gas.

If your cat experiences food poisoning, you will see some or all of these symptoms within 12 hours:  vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy, cramps, rashes or seizures.

Get your cat to the vet ASAP and if you can’t at least call ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.    A $60 fee may be billed to your credit card.

I do take my cats to a holistic vet and he says to offer them cooked greens, salads, meats, veggies, chicken and fish — whatever we are having for dinner.   It’s real food.   Just make sure there is no garlic or onions, or any else from the above list in the sauces or breading.

But if you really want the best cat food out there, you need to try Flint River Ranch Cat Food.   World’s Best Cat Food

Best Cat Food!

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

My girls (my 3 cats) are family to me and I want them to have the best food out there.    Since I know a thing or two about real nutrition, I was always trying new cat food to see how the girls would do.   My mini main coon mix, Bink, had skin allergies and the regular vet could not determine what the problem was.  She was chewing off all the fur on her belly, back legs and hind end because her skin itched so bad.   She was underweight, had huge hair balls due to ingesting all that fur and she was so uncomfortable.  She hated being petted and she never purred.  In order to increase her quality of life I had to resort to putting her on prednisone.  It did calm down her allergies but because this medication suppresses the immune system, she started getting frequent bladder infections and colds.  I ended up trading one condition for 2 others.My cat with food allergies.

Finally at my wits end, I found out about a holistic vet in our area.  This vet treats animals with herbs and nutrition, and he specializes in handling pet allergies.   He examined her and found no fleas at all, but lots of little itchy bumps on her skin from allergies which he explained were most likely food allergies.   He said most cat food is just junk.  It contains animal by-products (which I already knew to watch for) and “food” that is not fit for human consumption.  He introduced me to Flint River Ranch cat food, the dry version.  He took Bink off her prednisone and put her on Flint River Ranch cat food, which is real food. This food has no animal byproducts in it, no bone, no cartilage, no “meals” that you find in other pet foods.  They use a variety of meat proteins.   Their meats can be considered human-quality, similar in ranking to store-brand meats you would buy for your own family.

The chicken they use is certified hormone and antibiotic free.

The lamb is free-range fed and imported from New Zealand.  Lamb is also one of the easiest meat proteins for your pets to digest.

The fish is generally a combination of ocean white fish (herring, trout, and menhaden).  Some of their fish is farm raised, but their Bonita and Menhaden is caught directly from the clear blue oceans. Fish is a great source of Vitamin D & A and healthy Omega 3.

Their grains are purchased from American commercial suppliers. They arrive to the company tested and certified-free of natural toxins and molds.

Their chelated minerals are bonded to amino acids. This is highly effective in providing metabolic absorption in your pet’s digestive system.  Their products are naturally preserved with a combination of mixed Tocopherols (Vitamin E) and Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).

The list of vitamins and minerals contained in their food is way too long for this post but you can read about all the ingredients and the process of how the food is made at this website: Flint River Ranch

* 100% Natural Ingredients
* 100% Nutritionally Dense
